The surgeon can usually make that decision in about 10 seconds. There are two considerations when choosing between liposuction and a tummy tuck. 1. is there separation (bulging or pooching) of the muscle? 2. is there excess and stretched skin? If either of these two findings is discovered on examination, a tummy tuck will provide a better result. I rarely will tell a patient that they “need” a certain procedure. Plastic surgery is about balancing expectations and goals for recovery. I have certainly performed liposuction in patients who would have achieved a greater benefit from a tummy tuck; but, the patient and I decided on the less invasive procedure due to recovery time and scarring. The doctor-patient relationship is critical in plastic surgery to align expectations.
The recovery in case of liposuction is typically shorter and less painful in comparison to that of tummy tuck. In many cases, liposuction can be performed using only local anesthesia. It involves smaller incisions, which will heal faster. Tummy tuck, on the other hand, will require at least 10 to 14 days for a proper recovery when patients may return to work. However, strenuous activities in both cases should be avoided for about a month.
In wet liposuction, tumescent fluid is injected into the fat tissue. The fluid contains the anesthetic drug lidocaine along with the vasoconstrictor epinephrine. The fatty tissue is then removed from the body by a small device called a cannula. In the dry liposuction technique, no tumescent fluid is injected. This technique is rarely used as it causes additional bleeding.
Are you living with excess flab on your stomach that just won’t go away with diet and exercise? If this sounds like you, you may want to consider plastic surgery to correct the issue. However, many patients find themselves torn over whether they need a tummy tuck or liposuction. To help make your decision easier, we have broken down the differences between these procedures.
It will take up to 90 days to 6 months to see the final result. Remember, these 6 treatments will reduce the body by 20% of the fat. If you are looking for a 50% or more reduction you will need to do the treatments again a second or third time.
Incisions are too small to leave much noticeable scarring after the procedure. You will be able to go home immediately following your procedure. We advise patients to wait to shower until the next day and resume regular activities as they feel ready. Most patients can go back to work within two to three days and return to their workout routines within two weeks.
If both issues affect you, a tummy tuck incorporating liposuction may be recommended. In general, liposuction requires a shorter recovery period than a tummy tuck. However, as with any plastic surgery procedure, recovery time depends primarily on the extent of surgery. During a consultation, Dr. Van Wyck will listen carefully as you explain your goals.
