Liposuction: Cost, Side Effects, Recovery

liposuction recoveryPatients opting for liposuction surgery have plenty of different techniques and options available to them, depending on their needs, expectations and the part of the body where the liposuction will take place. Different parts of the body store different types and amounts of fat, meaning that better aesthetically pleasing results can be achieved by using the proper type of liposuction. Suction assisted liposuction is the traditional type of liposuction where the surgeon breaks down fatty deposits with the use of a cannula (a hollow tube).

Depending on the anesthesia used, patients can leave the surgical center within 1 to 3 hours following their procedure. If a general anesthetic is used, patients are monitored in the recovery area by registered nurses until they are stable and ready to return home or to an after-care facility. Dr. Younai uses a local anesthetic in the majority of patients and they can leave the facility as soon as they wish following the treatment.

For the most part, your surgeon isn’t worried about timelines so much as your body hitting certain healing benchmarks. Those are going to be the most important things. There’s also something to be said for finding ways to feel good during your recovery process. The simple act of finding a way to enjoy yourself for a couple of hours can help recovery feel like it’s going a bit more quickly. And that can be a huge help.

After your liposuction recovery period begins, you will have to wear a special tight garment. This piece of clothing will compress your skin after the liposuction procedure is complete. The garment must be worn for one week straight after the surgery. Once you complete a full week, then you’ll bump the time down to 12 hours per day. This goes on for up to six weeks. Our patients are able to exercise within two days post-op. There are benefits to returning to normal physical activity after having your procedure done.

Daily activities may be limited around this period, too. Around this time, your incisions should already have healed and the swelling will be subsiding. You may gradually return to your usual activities of daily living immediately after surgery, but around the 3rd week light to moderate exercises may be done.

The intensity of physical assertion or exercising must be increased gradually. In the initial days after the surgery patients must indulge in only about 20-30% of their regular exercising routine and slowly increase it with time. Lack of physical exercise leads to soreness in various parts of the body and blood clot, especially in the lungs.

Generally, most patients can fly within 24 to 48 hours after liposuction surgery. However, prolonged car and/or airplane travel should be avoided to prevent the risk of blood clots in the legs. If bandages are applied to, the area these will require changing on a regular basis and you should ensure that this is done carefully and regularly. You should eat healthily during your recovery time as weight loss or gain can lead to irregularities in your shape when the final results are apparent. It is not the case that you will not be able to gain weight or gain more fat in the treatment area after liposuction although fat will become more easily distributed around your body.

Plastic surgeons will recommend a medical grade compression garment to wear, and will also advise patients on the period and amount of time these garments should be worn. When patients follow instructions from their plastic surgeon regarding compression garments, not only will they recover faster, but they will also maintain the look they wanted to achieve in the first place. It’s amazing to realize how much of a role a good diet plays in the every day life of each individual.
